SHANGHAI (CelebrityAccess) – China’s Shanghai Concert Hall will be getting a facelift come 2019.

Originally built as a cinema in 1930, it was transformed into the country’s first professional concert hall in 1959. In 2003, the 5,650-ton structure was slid 66.46 meters southeast to make way for the construction of the Yan’an Elevated Road.

Now, the 88-year-old theater is scheduled to close this upcoming March, 15 years after moving to its current location.

During the closure, the historical building, which is a rare example of Western classical-style completely designed by Chinese architects, will receive upgrades to its stage facilities in order to cater to higher demand.

The Shanghai Concert Hall hosts more than 500 concerts annually and is scheduled to reopen in January of 2020.
