Did Miley Cyrus Set Up 'Flowers' To Start Controversy?
Celebrities writing songs that are allegedly about their former relationships is nothing new. Millennials the world over remember the moment Justin Timberlake dropped the music video Cry Me A River, which featured a Britney Spears look alike. Let's not forget when '90s rocker chick Alanis Morissette released You Oughta Know, a song that was rumored to be written about comedian and Full House actor David Coulier. Even Taylor Swift has gained a reputation for writing songs, and even entire albums, about her exes and previous relationships, like Getaway Car and Forever and Always. Given how rocky the relationship between Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus appeared to be, fans are not entirely shocked that Cyrus may have written some songs about her now ex-beau.
And the songs span several albums throughout Miley's career, with Flowers being the most recent song fans speculate is about Liam Hemsworth. Fans of Cyrus were quick to make connections within the song that lead them to this opinion, a similar pattern they followed with other songs she has allegedly written about that relationship. But thus far, Miley hasn't seemed to confirm the rumors; did she create the drama on purpose?
Miley Has Written About Her Former Love Before
While Flowers is just one of the latest the Hannah Montana star has supposedly written about Liam, there are certainly other songs that one can assume are about him and the relationship they had as well.
Miley herself has admitted that the entire Bangerz album is about her relationship with Liam, which includes songs like Adore You, Someone Else, and of course Wrecking Ball. Even Malibu off her Younger Now album was written about where the relationship was at the time.
Miley and Liam had just reunited before the song was released, and she wrote the song to "put the power back in [her] relationship" and explained that the song is about love and how happy she was at that time. Several other songs off that same album, like Week Without You, are also presumed to be about Liam Hemsworth.
Following her separation from Hemsworth in late 2019, Cyrus released the song Slide Away, which some feel touches on their previous long-term relationship. Her song WTF Do I Know has the line "I don't even miss you," a lyric that she has said is about Liam.
Fans Believe Flowers Drops Some Serious Hints About Their Relationship
The song Flowers can be seen as a post-break-up, self-love anthem with lines like "I can buy myself flowers, write my name in the sand. Talk to myself for hours, say things you don't understand. I can take myself dancing, I can hold my own hand. Yeah, I can love me better than you can."
Fans of Miley were quick to notice that the pop icon released the song on the day of Liam's 33rd birthday, leading some to suspect that Flowers is directed right at him. Some made note of the similarity between Flowers and lines in Bruno Mars' When I Was Your Man, a song that Liam allegedly dedicated to Cyrus at one point
Other notable lines from the song include "Built a home and watched it burn," a likely reference to the Malibu house fire they both experienced while together. Fans also believe that the black suit Miley wore in part of the music video is the same one Liam wore to the Avengers: Endgame premiere.
Others have gone so far as to speculate that the name of the album, Endless Summer Vacation, further points fingers at Liam, but Miley herself has said that the title was meant to be a sort of "love letter to L.A."
So did Miley purposely choose her song's release date and the theme of her album to create drama?
Little Else Is Known About Miley's New Album Endless Summer Vacation
Outside the speculation surrounding Flowers, little else is known about Miley's album Endless Summer Vacation. As mentioned before, the songstress has indicated that the name is meant to be a love letter to Los Angeles while also being a reflection of her growth, both physically and mentally.
It does seem that some of the co-producers for the album are known as well and include the likes of Mike WiLL Made-It, Tyler Johnson, and Kid Harpoon, to name a few. Additional track names are still up in the air, but the album will feature thirteen songs for fans to enjoy.
Some fans were quick to notice that Lady Gaga has been registered on the song Flowers on ASCAP. The ASCAP essentially keeps track of who owns the rights to different songs, leading fans to believe that Gaga being listed as a performer on the song may indicate a possible remix with her in the future.
Regardless of the reason Miley released the song on Liam's birthday, and whether Flowers really is about him, fans are excited to see her back in the studio making music and ready to drop a new album, something they haven't gotten from Miley since 2020.
