Everything You Need to Know About Hulus New Innovative, Fearless and Badass Series Dress

Publish date: 2024-06-22

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like for your favorite artist to put together a blockbuster tour, then Hulu‘s newest reality competition series is a must-watch for you.

Dress My Tour, which dropped all ten episodes on the streaming giant today (July 23), follows 11 aspiring fashion designers on the raw, emotional journey of creating stunning fashion pieces worthy of the music world’s biggest names. Hosted by supermodel Kate Upton, with 7x Emmy Award-winning costume designer Marina Toybina and creative director, choreographer, and Emmy Award-nominated director LaurieAnn Gibson as judges and mentors, fans will be brought behind the curtain to really see how music and fashion collide.

“Their challenge for the week is to create something for that particular musician, whether it’s for a tour, a stage or a performance. From there, we follow their journey through the show,” Toybina tells Celeb Secrets host Juliet Schroder exclusively during a virtual junket. “This is something that we’ve never seen before, where we really showcase the form of merging costume and fashion as one. We’re able to introduce something new to our audience, go behind-the-scenes, and dive deep into how these iconic moments are being created.”

“I think where we are in music, fashion, and innovation with technology and how we are consuming things… this show is right on time because it opens a new plethora of information and inspiration from a historical perspective and from a future perspective,” Gibson adds. “Now, artists are expected to land 360 degrees with their experience and their music, and costume designing has always been a big part of this conversation. I feel like development is at its lowest state in the music industry, so this show is so innovative and so necessary that it’s going to inspire that conversation.”

With music superstars like Paula Abdul, JoJo Siwa, JT, Ty Dolla $ign, Toni Braxton, Coi Leray, French Montana and Jessie James Decker on the hunt for their next iconic look, stakes are beyond high. Making a show-stopping moment is never easy, and with $100,000 also at stake for the big winner, you better believe that there will be a lot of drama.

“It’s eclectic but stressful. That’s the reality of the process,” Marina shares.

“It’s innovative, fearless and badass!” LaurieAnn adds when describing the process.

Teasing that each week is like a “mini tour performance” within each challenge, both Marina and LaurieAnn made sure to provide their expertise whenever they could so each emerging designer could walk away with an out-of-this-world experience regardless of the final results.

“I feel like when we collaborate with anybody, I think the first part of is communication and being able to really have that dialogue as to what the aesthetic of the artist is, the performance, the moment. We were brought on to this project to give a little bit of yourself and create unique moments and memorable, iconic moments from your experience and your wealth of knowledge to the contestants. We allow them to explore their worlds and backgrounds, experiences and techniques to bring that all to the forefront and also understand where we’re coming from and the experience that we have behind us,” Marina explains.

“Our paw print, no pun intended, is an important part of the conversation for young visionaries and young artists and where we are in the world, period. The idea that we’re multi-hyphenated creatives and we get to speak to the baby versions of ourselves that were affected by the work we did was what I loved about being on this show. It has always been a passion of mine to pull out a raw talent to not only mentor it, but sometimes have the hard conversations, and that’s where we’ve been a united force. It’s really an awesome process.”

The contestants on the show include Keiandrea Daniels, Veejay Floresca, Michael Shead, Rey Ortiz, McCauley Star, Afaf Seyam, Jessica West, Todd Fisher, Julissa Peralta, Cierra Zacchaeus and Traviance Dunn.
